SAINT-PETERSBURG STATE UNIVERSITY FOR WATERWAYS COMMUNICATIONS

There is a precise answer to the question “where the real sea dog, the conqueror of the seas and the oceans, the ship captain is taught?” The answer is of course in Saint-Petersburg State University for Waterways Communications. It is one of the oldest transport Higher Education Establishments in Russia with its history that goes back to 1809. It has maintained its prestige among Russian and foreign naval technical universities for already two centuries. The University has gained plenty of proofs to that; one of the latest ones is gold medal received at the “European Quality” contest 2004 in the nomination “Top 100 Higher Education Establishments of Russia”. The University success in training of experienced specialists in all naval transport fields can easily be explained by the availability of professional tutors among who there is the president of Transport Academy of Russia, outstanding Russian figures in Science, honorable workers of inland water transport. Modern material and technical base as well as permanent development of technologies and ways of education procedure organization also contribute to the quality of training.
One of the greatest advantages of the University for Waterways Communications is the location. The University is situated in Saint Petersburg, the second largest and the most beautiful city of Russia, its cultural capital. The port is located close to the University, thus the students have the opportunity to become acquainted with the waterways transport activities in practice and get filled with a spirit of future profession.
Applicants can choose among 29 specialties and obtain Bachelor’s or Specialist’s Degree to be able to work on ships of the navy, inland water transport and coastal enterprises. The most popular faculties are those with the names connected with adventures and scientific discoveries: faculties of Ship Navigation, Ship Mechanics, Shipbuilding, Operation of Port Equipment and Transport Terminals. Upon graduation a student will receive the Degree of Saint-Petersburg State University for Waterways Communications and a certificate confirming that this degree is recognized in Great Britain and approved by London Institute of Marine Engineers. This significant appendix gives career opportunities to a graduate on the world’s level. Graduates of other faculties such as Economics, Law, Culture Science, except for the Russian Degree will obtain European appendix to the degree which will help to find a job and to continue education in other 45 European countries that signed  the “Bologna Convention”.
At present 10 000 people from more than 40 countries of the world study in this University. The University keeps close friendly and scientific relations with Higher Education Institutions of Germany, Holland, Great Britain, Poland, China and many other countries. Professors and students often go for short trainings abroad.
In the framework of the development of scientific activity, the University participates in state scientific programs “Transport of Russia” and “The World Ocean” and works on the new scientific projects of state importance. Paying great attention to the practical training of the students, the University opened a new training centre where one can found a unique computer complex (simulator) intended for developing and strengthening practical skills of ship navigating for students of the Ship Navigation Faculty and also for retraining of experienced navigators with degree.
To create comfort and good conditions for study, students are provided with modern residences, medical centre, students’ club, and research library. A great attention is traditionally paid to sport. In sport department boxing, basketball, swimming, aerobics, and such rare types of sport as sailing and cross-country skiing, polyathlon are trained. The University possesses its own yachts. Upon completion of the University course the graduate receives higher education degree of Russian national standard indicating speciality and qualification/degree received. By request the graduate is also entitled to get the European Appendix to the degree, which allows him/her to confirm the equivalence of the received University degree and apply for a job or continue education in any of the 45 European countries signed the Bologna convention on the Recognition of the Qualifications Concerning Higher Education.
The University graduates unlike others do not have any problems with the search and choice of future place of job. Wide theoretic background and great skills enable graduates to find a job according to their speciality right after graduation and to work as navigators, mechanics, directors of seaports and industrial enterprises. Among people who graduated from the University there are the leaders of high national level such as ministers, Government members, directors of transport and industrial enterprises, chiefs of scientific research and projects organizations and of education establishments. For the question which university they graduated from, everybody of them answers full of pride: “Saint-Petersburg State University for Waterways Communications!”

The above mentioned fees are valid for 2008/2009 academic year. Using this leaflet during the following academic years it is necessary to clarify the updated fees for the current year, as some slight changes may appear.

During the initial registration procedure the student pays 200 EURO as entrance fee to cover the expenses for processing the official invitation, sending the original letter of invitation and other documents via Express Mail, meeting the student at the international airport in Moscow/Saint-Petersburg, transfer to Moscow domestic airport, meeting in the Saint-Petersburg domestic airport, accompanying the student to the University, drawing up documents, entry registration application fees to the University etc. This amount does not include the cost of air ticket Moscow - Saint-Petersburg. Food expenses are 150-200 EURO per month. On first entering the Russian Federation the student should have about 400 EURO to buy some basic necessities (clothes, dishes, electrical equipment etc.).
