SAINT PETERSBURG STATE UNIVERSITY FOR FILM INDUSTRY AND TELEVISION

Saint Petersburg is the cultural capital and the second biggest city of Russia. It is often called the Imperial capital of Russia for the majesty of its architectural ensembles, the charming beauty of its spires and the splendid luxury of its imperial palaces. Famous Russian poets, writers, painters, architectures have lived and worked here. From here the representatives of powerful imperial dynasty governed the country. Today Saint Petersburg is famous in the world as a treasury of world art and architecture. It’s a city museum under the sky. Saint Petersburg is one of the most beautiful cities in the world with population of about 5 million people. Saint Petersburg is often called the European center of Science, Culture and Education. The city plays a leading role in the political and economical life of Russia and of the world.
It is in Saint Petersburg that the first film studio in Russia, “Lenfilm” was opened in 1918. At the same time a unique educational establishment-preparing specialists in all the film industry areas was opened – Saint Petersburg State University for Film Industry and Television.
Saint Petersburg State University for Film Industry and Television was founded in 1918 as the Supreme Institute for Photography and Photographic Engineering. During its more than 90-years history, the University transformed from a small Institute with two Faculties to a big and successful prestigious European University offering high quality education of world class. At present the University provides instruction in the prestigious and popular specialities of sound engineering technology, video technology, technology of entertainment, film photo video facilities, animation and computer graphics for film and television, multimedia technologies for advertising, advertising graphical and light design, as well as in such artistic specialities as: film and television direction, animation and computer graphics direction, film and television operator, sound producer, television journalism, dramaturgy, acting technique, etc.
About 30 thousand specialists from more than 50 countries of the word have been taught in the University during its history. The University’s status in different countries is very high and thus, it attracts a lot of students from different parts of the world. Presently, about 3500 international students from about 50 countries of the world study in the University.
In 2007, the University’s Chancelor, Professor A. A. Belousov, was awarded the prestigious Russian Film Academy prize “NIKA” for training of highly qualified personel for film and television industry of the country. Among University’s graduates there are many Russian and world famous film personalities, laureates and prizewinners of Russian and world awards.
During their education, students acquire not only professional knowledge, master necessary skills, but also use them in numerous students’ projects. One of the most important events in students’ life of the University is students’ film festival “Piterkit”. It becomes more and more popular every year. This event gives students the opportunity to make not only the laboratory and course works, but also real films. This festival demonstrates University’s prestige. It helps students – the future film directors and operators, to showcase themselves as prospective and promising specialists even before their graduation, which helps them find good employment in the future. Film organizations from different countries of the world pay attention to the festival winners. Due to this “Piterkit” helps students to acquire priceless experience of an independent activity in their future profession.
The University’s education is supported by more than 600 highly qualified professors. Taking into account the particularity of the artistic courses, instruction in several specialities carried out by an individual system of “One professor – One student”. This approach assures the graduates’ training of the highest level and helps them to hold honorable leading posts in state and private organizations of film industry. Among the alumni one would find famous heads and directors of theatres, concert complexes and cultural institutions.
More than 70 % of teachers have got the academic ranks of Doctor of Science, professors, assistant professors, candidates of Science. Screen Arts Faculty students have the unique opportunity to grasp the art under the direction of famous film directors, operators, dramaturgies, producers. The University has elaborated and assigned a complex of disciplines in film, television and video technology areas without analogue in other Universities.
High University’s status stimulates it for further development. Annually updated educational programs, unique educational methods, the latest equipment, modern material technical base, computer technology and rich library fund allows the training of the students of international quality. In view of the mass media rapid development, demands of specialists in the film industry, the University is a success among school graduates from different parts of the world. It is world recognized and has received numerous prices.
During their education students stay in comfortable rooms in the students’ hostel of the University.
Education in this University has got many advantages. In their free time, the students can visit the sports and exercise rooms, swimming pool situated in the campus’ territory. As leisure facilities, students have evening parties, excursions to different cities, visits of numerous theatres and museums and meetings with famous film directors and producers are also organized. The University’s graduates blossom into professionals who are required in Russia as well as abroad. They receive the opportunity to build a brilliant career at the biggest world television and film studios.
After graduation from the University students receive the higher education degree of Russian national standard indicating speciality and qualification. Degrees of the Saint Petersburg University for Film Industry and Television are recognized world over and considered as a mark of high quality education. Graduates if they wish may also get the European Appendix to the degree, which allows them to obtain the equivalence to the University degree in any of the 45 European countries that signed up to the “Bologna Agreement of mutual recognition of education documents” to continue education or to find a job.

Course duration (academic years):

During the initial registration procedure the student pays a 200 EURO entrance fee to cover the expenses on making up the official invitation, sending the original letter of invitation and other documents via Express Mail, meeting the student at the international airport in Moscow or St. Petersburg, transferring him/her to the domestic flights airport/railway station in Moscow, meeting the student at the railway station/ airport in St. Petersburg and seeing him/her to the university, drawing up documents for university admission, university registration fee, etc. This sum does not cover the air or train ticket costs.
Food expenses are 200 EURO per month. On first entering the Russian Federation the student should have about 400 EURO to buy some basic necessities and personal things (clothes, dishes, electrical equipment, etc.).
