Which profession in the world can be more humane and significant than the profession of a doctor; what else is as vital as the ability to save human lives? Everyday doctor’s routine is filled with nobleness, help, compassion and search of new possibilities to assist in the continuing improvement of healthcare. There are not many professions of which one might say with no exaggeration, “This job is done for the benefit of the whole human race”. Surely, the first and most important among such professions is that of a doctor.
Such competent and responsible profession requires proper education and a wealth of experience. Russia is proud of its medical traditions, latest achievements and scientific breakthroughs. It is a home country for many Noble Prize winners in Medicine and the doctors of high proficiency. Russian higher medical education not only corresponds to the highest requirements but it has its leaders recognized worldwide. One of these leaders, Russian State Medical University, was founded in 1906. Russian State Medical University is established by the government of the Russian Federation and it has an extremely important and distinctive mission – to provide a focus for excellence in training of qualified medical specialists, professors and scientists; to deliver advanced training of scientific and academic staff; to engage in realization of integrated research projects in the most vital spheres of medical science. The university’s traditions, achievements and progress are the pride of Russian and world modern medicine. Russian State Medical University has always been an outstanding highly qualified educational establishment and the largest clinical and research center in Russia. The university is generally considered to be one of the top-ranked Russian state higher medical educational establishments, which is approved by the World Health Organization (WHO) and awarded by numerous decorations and prizes for its contribution to development of medicine worldwide.
The University is divided into 9 faculties and 135 academic departments: General Medicine, Pediatrics, Biomedical, Moscow faculty, Clinical Psychology, Preparatory faculty, Postgraduate programs, Further training of doctors, Advanced training of academic staff. The Faculty is represented by 2000 teachers, professors, Doctors and Candidates of Science, as well as corresponding members of the Russian Academy of Science and of the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences. Honored professors, National awards winners, the best Russian and world’s professionals share their knowledge with the students. Russian State Medical University is licensed and accredited by the state to prepare specialists in Medicine. Training is carried out in Russian and in English mediums.
Russian State Medical University today is home to more than 9000 students at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, among them 700 foreign students from over 60 countries of the world. University graduates receive national degrees in education that confirm their competence and skills to be in accordance with the state educational standards prescribed for their specialities. A University degree confirms that its owner has achieved the standard of theoretical knowledge and practical skills sufficient to perform medical activities in accordance with the national requirements, and it entitles the person certified to exercise medicine professionally on the territory of the Russian Federation and in other countries.
The university has a diverse structure which includes science and research institutes, laboratories, and comprehensive facilities for advanced training for research associates. The educational and research support is carried out by large departments of the University – department of post graduate studies, clinical residency and doctorate, department of informational and educational system, training directorate, deanery of externship and internship programs, foreign students’ department.
Scientists of the University have made stupendous achievements in the ongoing development of new intervention and treatments of worldwide diseases in varied spheres – cardiovascular, infectious, surgery, pediatrics, ophthalmology, gynecology, internal medicine, nanotechnologies in medicine and many others.
Russian State Medical University has a close relationship with the practical health service which facilitates the translation of research into real improvements in patient care. The students are provided with free access to more than 100 affiliated large specialized hospitals in Moscow where they under the supervision of highly experienced professors. Theoretical departments of General Medicine, Pediatrics, Moscow and Biomedical faculties are located in the educational and laboratory part and supported with the most advanced medical equipment. Large reading hall of the university library with a fund of about 1 million volumes provides access to a wealth of information resources required by members of the University for research, learning and teaching.
The University offers the most advanced medical equipment and the most modern material and technical base which are being improved constantly in accordance with developing medical and diagnostic technologies. High scientific and intellectual capacity of the Faculty gives a very positive endorsement of the quality of teaching techniques and allows constant innovation of syllabuses.
At present Russian State Medical University includes the following facilities: a complex of educational, laboratory, research and other buildings, student city “Medik”, health resort, dining hall, student sports and health camp on the Volga River, fundamental library, and clinical bases in the city hospitals, polyclinics and other medical establishments.
The most important principle of training is that from the very first year of studies students have accesses to patients. Interdisciplinary approach to training in fundamental subjects and unique combination of a supportive learning environment and a wealth of clinical experience also provide the efficiency of education.
Students also take part in research within the framework of the student research programs and societies.
Programs and syllabuses that are used in the course of training are those recommended by the World Federation of Medical Education (WFME). During the period of studies, all students are guaranteed to get accommodated in comfortable hostels in 10 minutes walk from the educational campuses, where they share a room with one or two students.
The University has made a commitment to maintain perpetual ongoing dialogue with worldwide recognized international organizations, including education and research institutions (France, Germany, Switzerland, USA, Great Britain and many others).
Upon successful completion of any Russian state university, the graduate gets higher education degree of Russian national standard indicating speciality and qualification. The graduate also gets EUROPEAN APPENDIX to the degree, which allows to apply for a prestigious job or continue education in 45 European countries signed up to the Bologna convention on the Recognition of Qualifications Concerning Higher Education. Russian State Medical University alumni have gone on to hold positions of great responsibility and influence having their medical practice in more than 100 countries of the world. 

The tuition, accommodation and insurance fees mentioned above are valid for the academic year of 2008/2009. Using this booklet in the subsequent academic years, you will need to inquire about the current tuition fees, as some slight changes are possible. During the initial registration procedure the student pays 200 EURO (to be included into invoice for payment of the total amount), which covers the University registration fee, meeting of the student at the international airport in Moscow, drawing up documents for University admission, etc. The above amount does not include the airfare. Food expenses are 150 EURO per month. When first entering the Russian Federation, the student should have about 400 EURO to buy some basic necessities and personal things (clothes, dishes, electrical equipment, etc.).
