Novgorod the Great is one of the oldest Russian towns, which has retained its antique charm. Since the 11th century, Novgorod the Great has been a center of literacy and education. It was here that the earliest pieces of Old Russian literature first emerged to encourage people’s love for books and knowledge.
Novgorod the Great is situated 150 km from Saint-Petersburg and populated by approximately 350 000 people.
Novgorod State University, founded in 1932, bears the name of Prince Yaroslav the Wise of Novgorod. As a kind of his nominal successor, the University thus carries on the Prince’s mission of enlightenment, whose goal is to develop the Russian education and science for the benefit of the individual, the society, and the state. According to estimation by the European University Association, Novgorod State University is rated among the top ten of over a hundred classical universities of the Russian Federation. The winner of many international awards, the University is the leading regional center of culture, education and research.
The University incorporates 4 institutes, the Academy of Agriculture and Natural Resources, 4 university general faculties and 5 colleges. At its 23 faculties more than 60 specialities are taught in the areas of Medicine, Engineering and Technology, Economics and Humanities, including those that are available for postgraduate studies. Highly qualified teaching staff largely made up by Ph.D. and worldly recognized academics. There are special centers for Information Technologies, Marketing, an experimental plant and over 70 laboratories operating at the University, where students and researchers do their research in various priority areas of science and technology.
The University is technically equipped in accordance with the highest standards of the up-to-date technologies. There are 18 computer classrooms, a Web-laboratory, multimedia room, conference halls, presentation equipment. The department of Computer technologies is one of the University’s leaders. The high quality of education is ensured by the up-to-date syllabuses, which closely follow the current trends and perspectives of the world market, and the latest developments in the IT sphere. Many of the courses are being designed within the framework of participation in international educational programs organized by the global leaders in the IT industry, such as IBM (IBM Scholar Program), Cisco Systems (Cisco Networking Academy), Sun Microsystems (Sun Java Academy), Microsoft (Microsoft Academic and School Agreement).The international activities of the University are in full swing. It currently has contracts of cooperation with 26 universities of 11 countries, including the USA, Germany, Sweden, Finland, Poland and Norway. Student and teacher exchange, business trips, international programs, conferences, seminars and temporary courses are organized regularly. The Oxford visiting program is working at the University, which allows students and young researchers to do their research, attend libraries and take advice from the specialists of one of the world’s most famous and prestigious universities – Oxford University.
The number of international students wishing to study at Novgorod State University increases every year. The University is extremely popular with the students coming from Asia, Africa, South America, Arab countries and Europe. There are over 20 000 students from all continents of the planet studying at the University. For the period of studies, students stay in rooms for 2-3 people at the university hostel, properly furnished and provided with bedding. A special advantage of the Russian student hostels is a kitchen on every floor, where you are free to cook whatever you wish in accordance with your taste.
There are 4 university newspapers and magazines covering academic news as well as various events of the rich social experience of the students: theme parties, concerts, performances and competitions. Talented students of the Faculties of Journalism and Philology, as well as anyone who wishes to gain some writing experience, are editors and reporters.
A good combination of profound theoretical knowledge and a broad range of practical skills acquired by students during their academic activities brings about the high efficiency of education at Novgorod State University. Upon successful completion of any Russian state university, the graduate gets higher education degree of Russian national standard indicating speciality and qualification. The graduate also gets EUROPEAN APPENDIX to the degree, which allows to apply for a prestigious job or continue education in 45 European countries signed up to the Bologna convention on the Recognition of Qualifications Concerning Higher Education.

Course duration:
4 years for a Bachelor’s degree

During the initial registration procedure the student pays a 200 EURO entrance fee to cover the expenses on making up the official invitation, sending the original letter of invitation and other documents via Express Mail, meeting the student at the international airport in Moscow or St. Petersburg, transferring him/her to the domestic airport in Moscow, meeting the student at the airport in St. Petersburg, transferring the student to Novgorod the Great by minibus (3 hours route) and seeing him/her to the university, drawing up documents for university admission, university registration fee, etc. This sum does not cover the air or train ticket costs.
Food expenses are 150 EURO per month. On first entering the Russian Federation the student should have about 400 EURO to buy some basic necessities and personal things (clothes, dishes, electrical equipment, etc.).
